SPEAKER_00Well, we are on week two of the horror, space horror, March Madness bracket tournament, head-to-head movie voting extravaganza.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, keep going.
SPEAKER_00I ran out of words.
SPEAKER_01Casey of all people, me, who came up with the idea for this bracket, said that we picked the most boring bracket.
SPEAKER_00I threw out, you asked me for six ideas, and I threw them out, and somehow we landed on this one.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_00Which I guess with it being not the most sought-after or popular theme of horror makes it more difficult or exciting.
SPEAKER_01He just thinks that it because he doesn't seek it out means that everyone everybody doesn't seek it out.
SPEAKER_00I mean, it's not prevalent. Like you see like one space horror movie come out like every ten years. It's not a lot.
SPEAKER_01I mean, that's true, but I think we need more of it. I like space horror. I'm a good I'm I like the mixture of sci-fi and horror.
SPEAKER_00I think they just get samey, and I think a lot of people think space horror is more like up in space, which this is a nice mixture of up in space and space visiting Earth. I mean us, yeah. So with that, there was some saving graces in here and some interesting choices. How were they chosen? Just at random?
SPEAKER_01Sort of.
SPEAKER_00Cool.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Pretty much. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Easy.
SPEAKER_01Random. It was easy. Easy, easy. Even yeah.
SPEAKER_00Even. And that's how we got big heavy hitters like Alien and the Thing.
SPEAKER_01And then Horizon. And then Alien.
SPEAKER_00And then big bigger hitters. And I think even bigger hitters like Leprechaun 4 and Jason Egg.
SPEAKER_01Good lord. Good lord.
SPEAKER_00My little green dude, man. He doesn't get the love he deserves.
SPEAKER_01Well, you Mike went in on it. My my friend Mike was like, oh, Leprechaun 4 for the win. Shout out to Mike. But seriously, y'all are crazy.
SPEAKER_00That's Leprechaun.
SPEAKER_01Y'all crazy.
SPEAKER_00Or my little ghost of friend.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, your ghosts are dead.
SPEAKER_00Ghosts. Well, that's redundant. You've noticed how shit. That was the joke. The jig is up, guys. I don't know if you know this. Don't break it to them. They don't know.
SPEAKER_01They don't know.
SPEAKER_00They don't know. Well, after the first round, what movies were eliminated? Alien won over Jason X.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Life won over Europa Report.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Life won. Event Horizon won. The Cloverfield Paradox won.
SPEAKER_00It did, which it was up against.
SPEAKER_01The A Quiet Place Part 2.
SPEAKER_00Ah.
SPEAKER_01Well, that was the underdog coming in for the win. A big underdog. Damn.
SPEAKER_00The thing, of course, overtook Ghosts of Mars.
SPEAKER_01Uh Pandorum 1.
SPEAKER_00Pandorum 1 over which one?
SPEAKER_01Over Sunshine.
SPEAKER_00Sunshine and Aliens won over Leprechaun 4.
SPEAKER_01And Pitch Black.
SPEAKER_00Pitch Black won over the Fourth Kind. The Fourth Kind. Which that's a tough one for me. I thought for sure Pitch um Fourth Kind would have had that one in the bag. It's definitely scarier than Ven Diesel in space talking about family. Uh with his glowy eyes. But now that leaves us with uh Alien versus Life. Yep. The second round. Alien vs. Life. Okay.
SPEAKER_01So the this thing, I don't know why, but for some reason it rotated some things, so I gotta change it. It did. But anyway, uh round two on the left side is Alien versus Life. Then Event Horizon versus the Cloverfield Paradox.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so you're talking about the actual lineup. Yeah, okay, good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And then on the right side, it's supposed to be Pandorum versus the Thing, and then Pitch Black versus Aliens. Which I mean to me it's like no question. The final four are gonna be Alien, Thing, Event Horizon, and Aliens.
SPEAKER_00Which will be a heck of a matchup if that's how it goes, but we'll let people vote. I mean, we might get some underdog votes in there.
SPEAKER_01We we might.
SPEAKER_00You know, we got some cult, cult classics in here. I'm very curious about life. I've been trying to work my way through some of the less popular movies in this in this lineup for Confour. I mean, the most popular one. Uh, I watched the Cloverfield Paradox today. Alright, I'm gonna talk about Cloverfield Paradox for half a second because it's in the next running. It's in the next running.
SPEAKER_01It's in the next running.
SPEAKER_00It so tries to be Event Horizon. And I like the Cloverfield universe. I like the fact that they've let it span out over movies and they keep using the same word, so you know it's in the same universe, and how they try to do it with different genres and themes and elements of horror without being like the same movie. The first one was a big monster movie, running through the streets and things are attacking. And then Cloverfield Lane was very much a claustrophobia, like paranoia movie. This one was a big spaceship kind of claustrophobia, interdimensional particles colliding movie, saving the world movie. And like I like the fact that they try to dive into something else, but they lose themselves so quickly. They have like one or two, maybe three instances of interdimensional rifts and collisions and weird things happening because of that, and then they just lose the whole idea, and then they just kind of push it away. And for such a cool concept for it to happen, it just ends with a spoiler alert, with just like somebody chasing someone else down with a gun when they both have the same motive, they both have the same mode, like they transport to a different dimension and they're trying to get back, but the person chasing the other person with a gun, they both want to stay in that dimension and want to save it. So I do not know the conflict there. It kind of falls apart pretty quickly. Um, so with that, I'll say after watching it, I'm glad I did. It was always on my radar. Um, I will be fully supporting Event Horizon. So I like the fact that they are is that is that who's against each other?
SPEAKER_01They're against each other. Okay, so this So they're very similar movies racing off.
SPEAKER_00And one definitely wanted to be the other one, but couldn't. It's amazing that they with the technology and the budget they had, they couldn't even go even with Event Horizon. They wanted to be it and they just could not match that energy of back then.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, the energy just even so we just watched Alien together. I guess we should go into that.
SPEAKER_00That was my first time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Casey, this guy.
SPEAKER_00Not my not my favorite genre of horror.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I I can tell by the oh, it's boring, and not a lot of directors want to produce movies that are in space. But let's just talk about Alien.
SPEAKER_00Let's talk about Alien.
SPEAKER_01Alien is just a one of a so good.
SPEAKER_00There's a lot of lot of grace with that. There's a lot of goodness in this movie. I can see why it's iconic, I can see where it came from. We were talking about it while watching it. The how it's shot, you can definitely tell the magic of this movie is in the director's chair.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_00They let they let scenes linger, they let you watch, they let the tension build very well in the beginning. And I feel like that was some of the beauty of like the early, like almost most of like the successful 80s horror was the ones that just kind of let a scene breathe. Like the beginning scenes where you see the captain in that in the mother room of the light, and you just watch him there, and you get they give you that feeling of isolation. Even though it's multiple characters, you get in the feeling of isolation, and you're kind of in a different world than the ones we're in, and the technology and just the space you're taking up in this movie. And I I've I felt drawn in immediately with just those very simple scenes, and that's that's that's a director's touch that I I cherish when I'm watching these older movies.
SPEAKER_01I agree. I think and and I was saying this to you as we were watching it. I I like how they build the tension and build the story so that you're like, when is the pen actually gonna drop? Like, what is gonna happen and how is the story gonna pan out? Because you you get pretty much right off the bat who you like and who you don't like. Right off the bat. I mean, I was sitting there like fuck man, love a rare occasion Ripley.
SPEAKER_00A rare occasion for Roxy. A rare occasion for Roxy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I was like, get him, Ripley. Um, but seriously, like every time she would stand up to the captain, I was just like, oh, if I could only do that at work, it would be like why don't you go fuck yourself? Why don't you just go fuck yourself?
SPEAKER_00But she said that to the guys like under the ship, still asking for a raise as the ship was broken and they're trying to get home. Like, hey, can we just solve? She was definitely the most logical and voice of reason of the whole movie. Don't let the fucker in.
SPEAKER_01She was the final girl.
SPEAKER_00He's got something on his face that's alien. Y'all are going to quarantine. No, let us in. Like, dude. And it was the captain giving her orders, and she even said, like, you'd be doing the same thing in my position because we have to protect this team. We could all get infected, it could be dangerous for all of us. She put her foot down and said, No, we have to follow this protocol because it's for the safety of the whole ship. And then Ash just goes, Bip, like, homie.

SPEAKER_00Dude.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00Face hugger. And you realize, like, he's on the science team. You're like, okay, this guy really just probably wants to investigate this organism on this guy's face. So you realize there's kind of ulterior motive than just him listening to his captain.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But then you find out there's even more of a motive that Tatan knew what it was at all.
SPEAKER_00Which, yes, he knew that they were out there looking for this organism, or they they had changed directive since finding this organism. Still baffles me that there is robotics and androids, technically cyborgs. No, it might be an android. In this in this realm, and they're not even shocked that he's a robot when they knock his head off.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And they're like, oh damn, it's a robot. Like, how they're just a commercial, like transporting of mineral ship. Like, it's not a bounty hunter crew. It's not some crazy expedition. It's just a commercial, it's basically a gi it's basically a semi-truck going through space, and that's what this crew is. And why would they not tell them that they have a robot on trip with them? Like, hey, this is what we're utilizing. This is the tools at your at your disposal.
SPEAKER_01I think it was a manipulative plan. I think they knew the the captain, I think they were meant to go to the ship and preserve the aliens. They were supposed to bring it back and preserve it. Like he knew what was happening the whole time. And so that's why when they found the ship, he was like, Oh, well, it's protocol to go down there and get on the ship and see if whatever is whatever.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01I think he knew the whole time. Like they didn't change anything. Like he knew what his mission was and what he was meant to do. And that's why fucking asshole.
SPEAKER_00I mean, it's just programming and the the crew is disposable. I thought the directive changed once they found the organism, and he was just saying, like, well, you know, if we get this SOS or if we get a signal out here somewhere space, we have to explore it.
SPEAKER_01No, maybe that was when you fell asleep and you missed that part of the plot.
SPEAKER_00No, he was talking about it. We have to go down there, we have to.
SPEAKER_01But you you missed that part of the plot when they found the robot, and she was like, He's try he was trying to get this thing the whole time. She was talking about it.
SPEAKER_00Well, I mean, she was she was trying she was explaining to them that the directive had changed and that they were all expendable to get this organism back to Earth to be investigated and to be dissected. Like even she now knew that it was telling them all about that.
SPEAKER_01I if it was So the Directive was always that. Okay, let's just the directive was always that. She was unaware, therefore, the directive didn't change, she just didn't know.
SPEAKER_00Well, like the main captain, if that's true, the main captain didn't know that was the directive because he was in charge the whole time and he had access to mother, the the AI on the ship. So he was the one that brought up, like, hey, we have to we we hear a signal, we have to go down and talk to them. And that's when the other guy who won a race kept talking, and that's when Ash jumped in. It's like, hey, we have to do it. Because the captain was like, dude, you can Ash say it, like you will not get paid if we do not go down there and investigate this signal. So the signal was to the captain, he saw it, realized that they have to go do it because that's their that's in their contract. So I think the directive may have changed and only Ash knew. But that's what it seems like to me. But it's the first time they got the signal.
SPEAKER_01So if they I think they knew.
SPEAKER_00If it was it was if that maybe that's explained in the second maybe that's explained in another movie, and I love this. I I I will start investigating this in indulging in this realm.
SPEAKER_01I and I love that you admitted that. I love that you admitted that you love a space horror movie.
SPEAKER_00It was fun, it was a good movie, it was well dog.
SPEAKER_01Speaking of boring space horror movies, uh, can we talk about the thing? That's your favorite movie?
SPEAKER_00You did not just call that all boring time. Not of all time, but it is my favorite movie.
SPEAKER_01And and you say that space horror is boring?
SPEAKER_00I wouldn't call I still wouldn't call that space horror. It's I think you just like to argue. It's a it's a body horror movie that just has like space has alien elements to it. I wouldn't call it space horror.
SPEAKER_01It's a space horror. Get over it. You just like to argue.
SPEAKER_00I like I like to just stick to my guns and my points about things. Like that one move that one doesn't feel like an alien movie. It's it's uh it's an infection. What are you talking about? It's an infection movie.
SPEAKER_01No, it's an alien that in that infects people, yeah. Yeah, but it's not, it's an alien movie.
SPEAKER_00It's from space, so yeah, it's a it's an alien organism that comes and infects people.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I mean I could put Slither on here, too. I could have added Slither to the list.
SPEAKER_00Oh god, if Slither would have would have mopped the floor with some of these movies. Slither's so good.
SPEAKER_01Slither is great. Slither's one of my fates.
SPEAKER_00Maybe we'll do an infection movie.
SPEAKER_01Well, you know, maybe next year.
SPEAKER_00Maybe for April we should do all like I don't want to say zombie movies, but like resurrection movies for the genie.
SPEAKER_01No, we've already done that. I'm so over zombie movies. No.
SPEAKER_00I mean, you could say the thing is a movie. You could say Slithers a zombie movie. You could say it's an infection movie. It just came from space. It's an alien movie. It just came from space. It infects people. Yeah. Just say it.
SPEAKER_01But it's an alien movie. It's not an infection movie. Well, it's an infection movie. Yes.
SPEAKER_00So what are the other ones?
SPEAKER_01It's an alien infection movie.
SPEAKER_00So which ones of these have you not seen?
SPEAKER_01I've seen all of them.
SPEAKER_00All of them?

SPEAKER_00I saw Pitch Black when I was probably like 13.
SPEAKER_01I saw Pitch Black when I was young.
SPEAKER_00I know none of it. Uh Pandorum, never. Uh Life, I've been curious about, but I heard I get terrible reviews, but I also usually try to ignore some reviews because sometimes they're way too harsh. Ven Horizon, I did watch last summer.
SPEAKER_01I watch that movie every year. Sci-fi plays it every single year.
SPEAKER_00On a particular date? Like is it like No.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it usually repeats. Sci-fi repeats movies all the time.
SPEAKER_00Well, yeah, I mean that's the beauty of it. Not that there's a lack of sci-fi movies, but maybe that one somehow sees it.
SPEAKER_01On sci-fi channel?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's pretty gory. How much do they cut out?
SPEAKER_01Event horizon.
SPEAKER_00Um I feel like they must cut out a good fair amount.
SPEAKER_01Well, not on like the apps and stuff.
SPEAKER_00Do you have the sci-fi app?
SPEAKER_01Duh.
SPEAKER_00Oh well. Alright. Good for you. Duh. Um here's you know what? You know what I wish did make it on here? Uh Starship Troopers.
SPEAKER_01No, I was gonna say the Leprechaun 4. No, no, no. We it was strictly sci-fi horror that needed to be on here. So if it had horror in its description, it went on here. It went on. Which Pitch Black had horror in its description.
SPEAKER_00I'm still shook, which I will watch this week because I am curious to see how it is horror.
SPEAKER_01It is horror. It's more action. I I will admit, it is more action. That's what I'm saying. There's a lot of horror in it. It's got a lot of horror elements.
SPEAKER_00I mean, that's that's something that I I'd like to debate with people. I guess this is where I would like to argue people, but I like to argue people just because I want to hear their takes, because there is a lot of times a fine line between action and horror. Like I would say aliens could have a fine line with that. Like it has horror elements.
SPEAKER_01You've never seen aliens, so you can't say anything. No, you mean alien.
SPEAKER_00Alien.
SPEAKER_01Not alien.
SPEAKER_00I mean alien.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Like it had horror elements, but it also, I wouldn't say that Predator is a horror movie, but some people consider it is, but I just consider that much more action.
SPEAKER_01Okay, I understand that, but I also understand that you can be genre-bending, you can have different genres in your movie.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01So you can be a sci-fi action horror like alien. You could also add, you know, adventure in there. And then you'd be pitch black. You could add thriller in there. Yeah. Seriously. I mean, there's just so many ways to describe a movie now that like I almost hate it when people hate because I'm like, yeah, but it can be more than just one.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01Like it doesn't have to be. And I get that a movie can be more of one than the other, which I understand that. But if it has the elements of one of the genres in it, it technically is. And technically it is.
SPEAKER_00I would not argue that I love the genre-bending ones. I love you know somebody just going and making a creative thing, and it seems to have elements of each.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, and for the I'm not trying to gatekeep. I just like that the I do like the little bit debate of of us sharing ideas of like, okay, is it a horror? Is it an action, like Predator? Uh I guess for me, I would be, hey, if it if is it horror, am I watching it to be scared, or am I watching it to be entertained like like an action movie more so? So what is the purpose for it's not so much like the genre of any is like what was the what was the purpose of the movie? What was the goal of the movie to get someone to feel? Were they like, oh yeah, sure big Arnold Horsner out there hunting down an alien who's also a badass? Like, did they want someone to be like, hell yeah, Space Rambo? Or were they like, This is a this is a terrifying creature coming down and hunting these dudes? This is a scary, like guerrilla warfare horror. Like what was what was the goal of the of the makers?
SPEAKER_01I think it was a little column A, little column B. And it depends on what kind of person you are. Like if you're watching that movie and you're not scared by the aliens, you're more so like, hell yeah, this guy's kicking ass.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01Then that's what you're gonna think. If you're if you're watching the movie and you're terrified by what those alien creatures look like, you're like, that's that's horrific. I don't care if this guy he's a final guy to people. Right. You know what I mean? So like it just depends on what kind of person you are. So like to say that it is more action than horror, that might be your opinion, sure. But to someone else, it might be more horror than action.
SPEAKER_00And see, and to that person, I would just love to have that conversation, just hashing out like points and things, just for the fun of the debate. And uh it's like I think you know, you got the you got G.I. Joe looking dudes out there fighting, uh they're fighting an invisible, invisible badass, and it's just like, oh yeah, that's awesome. Someone else, like, well, consider how terrified they must be in these woods and this invisible thing, it's just taking them out in gruesome ways. Like, that's terrifying, like right on, but like giant gun, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the like invisible horror from outer space, eviscerating capable men. Yeah, it's like, oh, let's blow for blow. Yeah, which is it. But of course, now we're talking about predator instead of aliens. But we're currently doing predator first alien.
SPEAKER_01But it is like uh it is a thing that people but people get so effing defensive about and that'll take the fun right out of it. It yeah, it doesn't it's not fun anymore when you're like, oh well that's not a horror movie. And it's just like, okay, well, to me it's scary. So Yeah.
SPEAKER_00If someone told me like, if I that would be me, I'm like, I'll think that's a horror movie. Instead of like, well, it's definitely not an action movie. I'm like, all right, well, let's talk about which way would it be? And instead of just shutting it down, like let's have a conversation. At the end of the day, like, is it a good movie? It's a good movie. Who gives a shit?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I now the little I know about the Aliens franchise is they seem to rock back and forth between more horror forward and more action forward. And I believe this one was more horror forward, and I believe the second one, Aliens, is more action forward. I only know that because at the end of the movie, you know, spoiler. The movie's been out for 50 goddamn years. Um, she fights the alien in a goddamn Gundam.
SPEAKER_01So Oh my god, it's amazing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_01Like it's it's so good. What but but okay, so I do have arguments that I will die on the hill of.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But not in the in the place that I wouldn't have a conversation, but I'm like, I'm not gonna change my mind, kind of thing. So to me, Aliens is 100% a better movie. Sorry, everyone out there that loves Alien. I love Aliens, I love the original idea, I love the movie, but I think Aliens is better, and I think it's because those two elements are very, very interesting. It is very action, but it is very horror.
SPEAKER_00So you think it's more even down the line?
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. But I think Aliens does a really good, it's almost like Terminator 2, right? I think it gets more action-y in Ter Terminator 2.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But it's still like, can you imagine seeing something form out of the floor from liquid that looks exactly like you and then just fucking eviscerates you? That's absolutely terrifying.
SPEAKER_00The terrifying the liquid terminator scared me so much more as a kid than the red-eyed skeleton terminator for that exact reason. Yeah. Because I was like, Yeah, nothing can stop it. Nothing is slowing this thing down, nothing is it is liquid, it's constantly forming. So it gives me that primal fear that something in the world that is borderline, unkillable, and unstoppable is just after me somewhere and somehow.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And that shit is terrifying. It's terrifying to think about. And that's that's what I mean by these genre benders that are just like, oh yeah, you can you can see how much more action is involved in those movies, but like they turn up how horrific the villain is. It's I mean, it goes from zero to sixty. It goes from ten to sixty. But seriously, they get a lot more terrifying in Alien. I feel like it was more of the atmosphere, which I love.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01Don't get me wrong, I love a good atmospheric movie, but aliens, they are a lot more in your face.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, I mean, it's not like there's more of them.
SPEAKER_01Yes. And they're a lot more in your face, and it's very, very scary. It it takes it up. Right. Um, so that's that's what I mean by like when you say, oh, it's more action, yes, but the horror is also turned out.
SPEAKER_00Which I'm hoping there's like more gore, more deadlier kills.
SPEAKER_01You're getting you're getting a lot more. Like Alien was you you only saw what, like three dead bodies, and one of them was a robot.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah, we completely lost the captain. He was just like, he was fucked off the ship.
SPEAKER_01And then well, the chestburster.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_01That was that was four. So four dead bodies.
SPEAKER_00No, that was that was that was that was a Cloverfield um paradox.
SPEAKER_01What about?
SPEAKER_00Oh man. They that was a movie that just felt like they had cool ideas for space deaths and just shoehorn them in there without any rhyme or reason. Like it just It sounds about right. Like it was so cool. There was a girl frozen in a cube of ice from a room that was filling with water that she went down there to cut a blanket out of or something, and they were as they were trying to fix that room, that problem, she goes down in that room to fix it. It gets fixed, fills with water, she can't get out, and then these giant steel space pressure doors fail due to water pressure, which this room is meant to hold water, yeah, explodes out of the back and instantly freezes her in suspension in the door. Cool, absolutely cool. Yeah, none of it should have happened. Yeah, none of it should have happened.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and that's when you have to like think about suspension of disbelief, you know. I mean, how much can you suspend in that scenario?
SPEAKER_00Apparently a whole body suspended a night.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But yeah, I mean that that kind of stuff kind of reminds me of some of these traps that are in Saw. Oh because it's like very circumstantial, and then the circumstance is like, but that really shouldn't have happened. Like in a normal scenario, that probably would not have happened.
SPEAKER_00See, I was gonna bring up, I was gonna bring up uh Final Destination movies because Well those are those are just extreme deaths. Right.
SPEAKER_01All they are all of them.
SPEAKER_00It's just a couple people in a room like looking around the office, like, well, how would you die with a stapler? And they'd be like, Alright, let's write that in the movie. That the Final Destination movies are the definition of what a cool way to die, or what would be horrifically death, but you know, knowing that there has to be catastrophic failure on multiple levels to make it happen.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But they saw probably these movies and were like, alright, we have cool ways to die, how do we make it do it? It's the embodiment of death following them, making eight safety features fail, and then also like pigeons being slightly simpied to take people out.
SPEAKER_01To be fair, though, it is Final Destination, it is like you know, you're basically you're basically in it for the good kills and the laughs. Like, I mean, seriously, if that's what you're in it for, you know that it's gonna be gory, you know it's gonna be silly, you know the deaths are gonna be ridiculous, and and it's just that's what you're in it for. But if you're going to a movie like The Cloverfield Paradox and you get something like that, or Saul and you get something like that, you know, you're just kind of like, uh I don't know about that. I don't know about that movie.
SPEAKER_00I mean, that death could have been cool, but like eh Yeah, well I mean when you have a for me, yeah, when you have a plot and the plot is furthered by these deaths, but they there's no right real reason they should happen, they're just kind of happening. But that's why I love the final destination movies, because the reason for it happening is because they shouldn't happen.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And so that's why they're so far fetched. That's why I love every single one of them. But yeah, like I'm not even sure how good of a plot that is. Just people who are like, well, what would happen if all these deaths happened? I don't know. Death itself wanted to happen. Well, that's a that's the plot. The plot is these people are gonna die, and they're gonna die by accident in ridiculous ways. Yeah, that's it. There's no there's no point, there's no suspensions of disbelief because that is what would led to believe.
SPEAKER_02Exactly.
SPEAKER_00It's a movie that follows its own rules, and that's what I need. That's what I love about them.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00Um, do you want to talk about Pitch Black? Um you know more about it.

SPEAKER_00If you don't, I'm gonna talk about the thing because I mean we talked about that. We uh when was the last time we saw it?
SPEAKER_01I'll talk about Event Horizon.
SPEAKER_00We just covered Event Horizon. It's beautiful, it's before its time.
SPEAKER_01Uh it way before its time, let's be honest here. But Alien was way before its time. So Event Horizon ha was in this era, it was like right before the 2000s. So it was in this era of like still having somewhat serious horror, but extremely gory. Yeah. And it was just like it was was it before or after Saw came out? It was before Saw was like oh five, I think it was Saw. No, it was before Saw, but it was like I could see inspiration from that in Saw. You know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_00First Saw came out in 2004.

SPEAKER_00Event Horizon.
SPEAKER_01Event Horizon's 97. Yeah. I got you.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I can see yeah, I know. Um no, I could see Saw's influence from Event Horizon, like the the wire trap, you know, all the the scars on the face and like how the face looked. I feel like it was very similar to like Yeah, what do we mean?
SPEAKER_00A Saw space movie, like Saw in Space.
SPEAKER_01Sometime soon.
SPEAKER_00Like somehow, somehow they programmed a robot to fulfill Jake Saw's.
SPEAKER_01They make an Android out of Jigsaw's DNA.
SPEAKER_00It's just his head in a jar, like I'd like to play a game. But can someone change my water? Change my water or the handcuffs, close and cut your hands off, and you die. Like, it's gonna be ridiculous.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00Um I might I might come back into the Saul series for that. They lost me after a while. They lost me to the third one.
SPEAKER_01I I do agree with you there. I think that the first three movies, oh my god. The third movie had the best trap in the entire.
SPEAKER_00Those ones actually made me sick.

SPEAKER_00The one with the the turning of the limbs. Yep, that one that's that's when I clocked out. That's what actually no. I I was I had my punch card uh in the second one when she got pushed in a pile of needles. That wasn't her thing. Like you you piece of shit. That that was I held my punch card and then I saw that rack, and I was like, nope, I'm out. I'm gross. Couldn't do it, couldn't do it.
SPEAKER_01Although it's funny because I did have a nightmare from the fifth movie. Really? But it's only because yeah, I now I look back on it and I'm like, eh, I like the traps in the fifth movie. I just don't like I don't like Hoffman, the guy the the person that became the apprentice. I just don't like him. So all of the movies that have him in it, which is like the majority of them after the third movie, basically, it's all him. You need to see Saw X. You really do.
SPEAKER_00Fucking ten of them. They're coming out with another one soon, isn't it? Did I see that?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but you you really do need to see Saw X. I think you would appreciate it. But on the look, the look on his face is like, just my god. Girl, I am so fucking annoyed with you.

I'm in the small trap. Well, I paid $20 fucking dollars a video. Might as well hang out.

SPEAKER_01For real, though. I'm glad I brought us back into uh Event Horizon. Yeah, Event Horizon. This movie just every single time I watch it, I'm just blown away. And I see new things each time I watch it, which is crazy because I've seen this movie so many times. And I I always catch something new, and I'm like, oh, maybe I just didn't watch this part, or I didn't remember it, or I didn't clock it when I watched it. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00I've only seen it once, and I was surprised at it. It was it was uh it was not what I was expecting it to be. The title threw me off.
SPEAKER_01And the gates of hell, just like, oh, dude.
SPEAKER_00I mean, that movie was basically doom without the guns.
SPEAKER_01Doom in space.
SPEAKER_00Yep. So I mean it was it was basically that, and I really like the idea that they were unlocking hell in it. Um, that a space, a space horror could also be kind of like that religious horror, that existential horror, that spiritual horror is awesome.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Roxy was sitting there giving me shit because and I don't think I've ever brought it up before, but she says I bring it up every time we hang out. Um, but we're talking about space horror, and one of my favorite video games of all time is Dead Space.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Every single time we hang out.
SPEAKER_00Then I need to bring it up more. Um, and that game's incredible, and if they ever made a movie or series about that, I think it would be amazing, hopefully, they wouldn't ruin it. But they did the same thing. Like you're in space, but they unlock, they unlock like this this monolith, and it creates creatures from uh uh spiritual energy, like it's wild, and Gorya is all fucked and terrifying.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So watching Event Horizon, like I definitely got that that game, one of my favorite games of all time, took from that movie.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like I I think we mentioned before, like I love going back and watching older movies I haven't seen. And if I appreciate them or if I if I enjoy them or not, I can at least appreciate what it's given to me down the line of my favorite things that have been created because of those things. And Event Horizon is very much both those things. It's incredibly an awesome movie, and it's given us so much past it, even for being in just in the 90s, so many things were inspired by it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And it's it's uh it's kind of wild. I really love when I can watch a movie and see an Easter egg that has to do with Event Horizon, and I'm like, oh my god!
SPEAKER_00And there's gotta be a ton. Yeah, there's gotta be a ton.
SPEAKER_01Like I was just talking about the one in Saw. Like there's a ton of little things that like you when you see them, you're like, oh my god. But yeah, Event Horizon's just one of those movies that I seriously watch every year.
SPEAKER_00This is wild that you would see an Event Horizon Easter egg in a Saw movie.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, man. It's because I love that movie so much, and I could be making it an Easter egg.
SPEAKER_00Nah, it could be a homage.
SPEAKER_01But you never know.

SPEAKER_01I I will just touch on Pitch Black, I guess. So Pitch Black was a movie that I saw when I was really young. I haven't really seen it recently, so I don't I need to brush off on it. Um which I think that would be a good movie to watch at at some point this week. But I remember being absolutely terrified by this. And I thought just in general, that it worked out kind of like Alien and Predator, where it was like action and horror blended together. I think it was I mean, and it had thriller in there too.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But like, I mean, it's very much on that level of like there are malevolent things that are trying to kill competent people and only there's only one that can save them all. Only one. There can only be one Highlander in the pitch black. Yeah, but um, that's what I remember from it. Um otherwise, I I would have to brush up a little bit on the plot. I just remember being terrified by the the beings.
SPEAKER_00So that's something to look forward to.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I might like to watch it. Maybe I'll put that on while I'm doing dishes one night or something. It doesn't have to be a big, extravagant one. Sit down and watch.
SPEAKER_01I am curious about he does this stuff all the time. He's like, I wonder how much I can dig the knife into Roxy's heart. I wonder how much.
SPEAKER_00You watch so many of my favorite zombie movies and new ones while you were like doing other things. You can pick up.

SPEAKER_01Yeah, you should be. I watched Day of the Dead last week. Yeah, um, I was watching I was watching Joe Bob Briggs. It's it's actually awesome. It's on Shudder. You should watch it.

SPEAKER_01But he kind of does what we do, except he watches movies in between, and then he'll like pause the movie and talk about it and give like informational facts on the movie, which is really cool. And he has this like, I think she she was an old Playboy model or whatever, but she's the male girl, and she just kind of like keeps him in check from going on tangents. It's it's really funny. Um, but he's like this old guy from Texas that like gives reviews on movies, and his reviews are entertaining. I love that. Um he um he gives factual information on all of the movies that you watch, and then he uh tells a little a little joke at the end. Yeah and he reads a letter that someone writes into the show and stuff like that. But like I I found it to be really interesting, and I also watch a lot of movies that I never even knew existed, and he knows he's got a plethora of knowledge on horror in general.
SPEAKER_00That's why I love watching these. I love this stuff. I love watching the movies I haven't seen and like the deep dug-in no one's heard of bad movies.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And some of them are like, why am I even watching this? But um, he did say that he liked Day of the Dead the best.
SPEAKER_00It is the I watched Day of the Dead.
SPEAKER_01It was uh it was last week.
SPEAKER_00That's it. And another fun throwback to our our zombie month. Um I said Roxy month. I sent Roxy a picture the other day. Yesterday, I was at a record shop and they had the soundtrack to the serpent and the rainbow. If it wasn't $30, I'm gonna snatch it up immediately. Yeah. I might still go back. We're still wrapped in plastic. I don't even know.

SPEAKER_01And I would have walked in and I would have been like, fuck, are we listening to?
SPEAKER_00Just it might have been the score. Like, I have to go pick that up again. Oh my god, it was so funny to see.
SPEAKER_01Oh, they also had I watched Zombie again, which I never thought I would watch that movie ever again. But after knowing the facts of it, very interesting. The the facts of making the movie. I mean, I understand that it's it's an older movie. I still think it is not a good movie. Um and they had the um composer on the show playing music.

SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was really cool. But yeah, it was um it was an interesting episode. I just wanted to see what he had to say about the movie. I think he only gave it three stars, but I could be wrong.

SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um, some of these movies I cannot remember the plots to. And and that just goes to show what I would vote for. Like I do not remember the plot of life and I don't remember the plot of Pandorum.
SPEAKER_00Well, wasn't life kind of like Alien where they're in space and then like this little parasite gets in and they want to study it and then things go they get into hijigs?
SPEAKER_01I think that's why I forget the plot is because I'm like, this is basically a terrible alien. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I mean that's that I think that's why I don't really get into space horror, because it's either it's either an alien invasion or they're in space and they find an alien organism and it goes haywire. Like those are the two things. Unless you have Van Horizon and the Paradox, where they tried a new space weapon and things get weird because it's space and energies and dimensions, and that happens. So there's like three big plot points for for space movies, and it's just never really something I gravitated towards.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Because well, you kind of know it's gonna happen one way or the other. That said, it's so fun to see how some execute those ideas like Alien.
SPEAKER_01Let's move to the thing. You can rant about the thing for a little bit.
SPEAKER_00It's so good. Uh the thing is, I think, the most because we're almost out of nowhere. Yep. I think the thing is the most unique of all these movies, just because it's the only one where I think it takes place on earth in present day, supposedly, on earth in present day, and it's an invasion movie, but not so much invasion as it is infection into body horror. And I think Event Horizon got into a little body horror, but the thing is all body horror. Uh double practical effects, absolutely insane. And I it's such a shame. So many of these movies, Alien, The Thing, um, Event Horizon, all practical effects, wonderfully done for the times that we're in. Why we got away from them is just devastating. Yeah. Um, I agree. So we've seen the thing, which if you watch it today, it is still impressive as shit. And like it was so good. How we went away from that, just because, oh, it's cheaper to do CGI, it's not cheaper. Because it looks like shit, so you're not gonna get your return anyway. That is a whole different rant. But the thing in itself and the beauty of it, it's still talked about today, the paranoia, the isolation, because even though you're not up in space, they're isolated up in Antarctica and the snow, really bad storms, there's nowhere they can go. I think their helicopter explodes, they are stuck there dealing with this thing in small contained areas. I feel like that's almost more reminiscent of like space horror than any part, than the alien itself, because you only see a spaceship in the beginning and then they go investigate it, but the rest of the time it is just gore, paranoia, distrust, and isolation. And it's just there's not many movies that hold up as well as that movie. And it came out Glorious Fuck! It's so good. And like well done gore. The AI image of the thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I know, it's terrible.
SPEAKER_00Discount Kurt Russell with some daughter in his arms. That's fucking hilarious. Oh my god, I didn't even see the alien one. I know. It looks like a looks like a killer whale.
SPEAKER_01Let's not talk about it. Let's not talk about it because that was the that was the last thing that I put together, and I had to do it really quickly, and it got all kinds of fucked up. So we don't want to talk about it.
SPEAKER_00The beautiful thing about Roxy is she will get it done. She will do it, it will happen. This podcast will not happen without her, and her motivation, and her tenacity. And she is wonderful. But then also with that, I am way too detail-oriented, and that's why I don't end up doing things like this by myself because I will It's 1982, actually. Ooh. I will be so detail-oriented, I won't get anything done. And so this is where we're a good partnership because she'll actually get the shit done, and then I'll be like, What the fuck?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But it was like, oh, what in the discount AI is this? And I'll be like, look.
